Smith Tower
Smith Tower - The 35th floor, outside, open-air
Observation Deck wraps completely around the historic Smith Tower providing breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Rainier, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges. Opened on July 4,
1914, the Smith Tower, at 38 floors, topped by a pyramid-shaped Gothic cap, and crowned by an 8-foot-wide glass dome, was the fourth tallest building in the world at the time, and remained the
tallest building west of the Mississippi River for almost 50 years. It is built with a steel framework wrapped in a cladding of white ornamented terra cotta. Mosaic tiles, Alaska marble and Mexican
Onyx provide a mirrored setting for the highly polished brass used as a trim on the elevators and the telegraph and mail chutes. The elegant elevators are still manually controlled by uniformed operators.
